Silo Season 2 Episode 4's Major Death & How It Will Impact The Main Villains Explained By Stars: "Things Are Going To Accelerate" (2025)

The following contains spoilers for Silo season 2, episode 4

Tim Robbins and Common discuss the major death in Silo season 2, episode 4, explaining how Bernard's fatal decision will impact him and Sims. Bernard (Robbins) and Sims (Common) find themselves in damage control mode as Silo season 2 kicks off. Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) is being elevated to hero status by the other workers in Mechanical, and Mayor Meadows (Tanya Moodie) suddenly has her own plans to leave the silo and follow in Juliette’s path. In a desperate play to fix the situation, Bernard kills Meadows, conspiring to blame the mayor’s death on Knox (Shane McRae) and Shirley (Remmie Milner).

As Robbins and Common discussed in a recent interview with Collider, Bernard may think he relieved the pressure on himself by dispensing with Meadows while framing two leaders of the burgeoning rebellion, but his latest chess move may only make matters worse for him and Sims as Silo season 2 plays out. Robbins talked about the reasons behind Bernard’s decision, and the deeper implications of his act of murder:

Robbins: I think he’s doing it because he’s trying to save the silo. No question. This is the tragedy of the character. He has to do things that he doesn’t want to do. It’s a pretty effed-up place [to be in]. But it’s an insight into what it is to have the responsibility that Bernard has. It’s not fun — let’s put it that way. Bernard is in a position where what we celebrate as what is human, the better natures of the human being, the ability to nurture and to love and to plan for the future in that way, according to his instructions and according to his responsibilities, are things that can lead to weakness, and so that’s a rough place to be.

Common also talked about the inner-conflict Sims is experiencing amid all the turmoil in the silo, feeling that he still "truly believes" he is doing "what's good for the silo", though also acknowledges that the trust between him and Bernard may start to break down going through the rest of the season:

Common: I mean, what Sims truly believes is that, "I need to do what’s good for the silo." If I’m going out saying something that I know didn’t happen, inside I know that is not the truth, but a greater truth that Sims believes is that "I need to say this so that I can make sure that these people’s lives are saved. I need to make sure that these people are protected." He knows when [Bernard] is lying, but it’s the greater truth that he believes in that he will lie for, kill for at times, and will just try to maneuver. But it’s not like he’s just looking to do that all the time.

Robbins and Common concluded by talking about Bernard and Sims’ complicated dynamic following Meadows' death, with the former saying that his character "would love to tell" Sims his full plans, but that he has "a certain knowledge that I have to hold onto that is a secret", while hyping what the season finale has in store. Check out the rest of what the two shared below:

Robbins: I have a certain knowledge that I have to hold onto that is a secret, and I would love to tell [Sims] about, but I can't.

Common: We’re alike in ways where we really do want what’s good… but Bernard’s in an even more lonely place because he doesn’t have the family that I have.

Robbins: Things are going to accelerate. It’s interesting where both these characters wind up at the end of the season.

Common: [Episode 10's conclusion is] very interesting. Definitely, as Tim said, when I was reading, I was like, "Oh, this is good!" Our characters are dealing with a lot within and outside. So, it’s a lot to take on.

What This Means For Bernard And Sims In Silo Season 2

It Feels Like Conflict Is Brewing Between The Two

Robbins speaks about Bernard’s humanity in Silo season 2, characterizing him as someone who is fundamentally decent, but has been placed in an “effed up” situation. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that Bernard is in over his head, and Robbins believes this makes him a tragic character. The weakness Robbins refers to may manifest itself even more as the season plays out, leading Bernard to make increasingly desperate, and potentially disastrous, decisions.

Silo season 2 boasts a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Common, meanwhile, talks about Sims’ own conflicted nature, coloring him as a basically loyal henchman who understands his duties, and is willing to take drastic steps to protect the silo, but is not entirely blind to the reality of the situation. As both stars tease “accelerating” developments in season 2, it’s fair to wonder how far Sims’ loyalty actually goes, and if there are any lines he won’t cross in keeping the silo safe.

Bernard killed two birds with one stone by doing away with Meadows in Silo season 2 episode 4. He got rid of someone who was beginning to ask too many questions, while giving himself an excuse to arrest two of the biggest agitators in Mechanical. The move may have relieved the pressure for the time-being, but it doesn’t change the fact that Juliette is still outside the silo, and that there are others in Mechanical who are ready to revolt against everyone in authority.

Sims remains something of a wild card in the whole situation. He may not be privy to all the information Bernard possesses, but he knows a few things, and has his own strong connection to the silo and its people. It will be interesting to see if Bernard and Sims ultimately find themselves at odds with each other, as the tension escalates on Silo.
